Relaxation with Salt and Sunshine
The idyllic Kurpark (spa park) right in the middle of the city offers spa guests, tourists and local residents a place to relax, recuperate and enjoy the silence. North of the park in an old sinkhole, the spring grounds, two salt springs still yield water with different saline concentrations. From time immemorial, the springs' extraordinary curative and highly concentrated salt has brought the city wealth and fame that extends way beyond Thuringia. These days in summer concerts are regularly held on the spring grounds. Uphill from the spring grounds is a boiling house, where on weekends you can watch salt workers dressed in traditional clothing as they make salt. There's also a 12-hole minigolf course, where young and old can test their skills. The lampion festival is held every year at the music pavilion in the middle of the spa park. On the site of the old salt water pool is the unique Solewasser-Vitalpark (salt water vitality park). Fountains and benches throughout the spa park offer plenty of seating for guests.
The spa park is located above the spring grounds. In earlier times this was the site of the old salt works on which 117 boiling huts were crowded. From 1799 three graduation towers were built here. Over the years the brine content of the springs declined and the consumption of wood increased. The graduation towers were in use until the middle of the 19th century, when new springs with high saline concentration were drilled.
