The history of the moated castle Heldrungen goes way back to the year 1217. The moated castle itself was built from 1512 to 1519 and, after its near destruction from 1664 to 1668, was equipped with a unique system of weirs. It has survived since then, a witness to the passing years. The castle and fortifications lie on the rise of Hoher Schrecke and Schmücke im Helderbachtal, not far from the Sachsenburgen. The easily recognized architectural elements of the fortifications include turrets, moats, earthworks and pointed bastions. Particularly impressive is the main gate with a vaulted arch flanked by two stout round bulwarks. The former inner bailey (fortified enclosure) has been rebuilt into a castle-line three-winged complex.
Guided tours are offered by appointment. A castle café in the north wing has space for 50 guests. It is also available for small parties of up to 20 persons.
