Located in the center of Sonderhausen on the spur of a hill, the Sonderhausen residential palace dominates the cityscape. Once the seat of counts, and after 1697, of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen princes, the palace today is the most important palace complex in North Thuringia and the venue of the Thuringian Schlossfestspiele Sondershausen.
During a visit to the palace museum, visitors can see a large number of historic items and learn interesting details about the more than 700-year-old building history.
Adjacent to the museum in the west wing is the music school Carl-Schroeder-Konservatorium of the Kyffhäuser district. The Tanzstudio Radeva offers ballet and dancing lessons to children and adults in the south wing of the palace.
Established in 2005, the Landesmusikakademie Sonderhausen sees to the musical qualification of amateur and professional musicians. The music academy has many very well-equipped practice rooms at its headquarters in the former royal stables.
Finally, mention must be made of "Hofküche" – an excellent restaurant with fine food in the west wing of the palace, specifically in the audience rooms of the last prince Karl Günther – which pampers palace guests and visitors.
