The former parish rectory is one of the most representative buildings in the city of Kelbra. Since 2000 the historically preserved half-timbered construction has housed the Knopfmacher Museum (button maker and local crafts museum) in its spacious ground floor. Some 170 years ago Kelbra's economic development was shaped by the button-making business. The museum gives visitors a look into the history of button making, from the import of mother-of-pearl shells to the development of machines built here for button manufacturing. Of course there are many buttons on display here. Since the start of the 20th century, buttons have been made of other materials such as horn, wood and plastic. Other local crafts and industries on exhibit include bakeries, shoe making, agriculture, fire fighting, mineral mining and film technology.
