Many bat species have lived close to humans for thousands of years, sometimes even under the same roof. Despite their proximity, we hardly ever notice them.
Their way of life in dark, hidden places and their appearance seem eerie and strange to us. The membranes between their long fingers enable them to fly quickly and quietly through the night. Even in the deepest darkness they effortlessly find their way as they acrobatically pick off insects in flight. They walk on walls and ceilings and hang upside down while they sleep and nurse their young.
Bats are unique in many ways and right at home in the Kyffhäuser Region. Twenty of the 24 species which live in Germany can be found here.
