The forests of the Kyffhäuser Nature Park are an excellent habitat for the wildcat, which is highly endangered in Thuringia. The population in the park, however, remains stable. Given the wildcat's way of life, it is hardly ever seen. During the day it withdraws and rests on the ground or in hollow trees. In undisturbed areas, the wildcat may hunt in the daytime, but its main activity takes place at dusk. The wildcat's normal prey is mice.
