According to legend, Emperor Barbarossa is hiding in the Kyffhäuser range of hills, which shares its name with the nature park. Not just the range has its story. The varied landscapes in the park reflect the centuries-old interaction of climate, underground and human activities. Sheep grazing and timber cultivation for salt mine fortification helped to bring about the region's biological diversity which is unequaled in Europe.
